José Martínez Suárez appointed President of Mar del Plata Festival

The renowned filmmaker was appointed President of the Mar del Plata Film Festival. In addition, this international event has been moved back.

Film director José Martínez Suárez was appointed new president of the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, succeeding Miguel Pereira. In 2006, Martínez Suárez was honored by the 21st Mar del Plata Festival with a retrospective of his filmography. And the 14th Festival selected him as a member of the Official Jury.

Martínez Suárez has shot a significant number of films, becoming an undisputable icon of Argentine cinema, which contributed to local and international renown and a long-standing career. The first film by Martínez Suárez, El crack, became part of the “60’s generation”, a 1960’s wave of innovative pictures, a phenomenon that left a deep mark on Argentine filmmaking from then on. Some of the films directed by Suarez are: Noches sin lunas ni soles (1984), Los muchachos de antes no usaban arsénico (1976), Los chantas (1975), Viaje de una noche de verano (1965), Dar la cara (1962) and El crack (1960). He also wrote Noches sin lunas ni soles, Los muchachos de antes no usaban arsénico, Los chantas, La Mary (1974), Dar la cara and El crack. In addition, he has been an assistant director, producer and performer.

Moreover, as from next year, the Festival will no longer be held in March, but –exact dates remain unconfirmed- during November and December 2008.
