Un hombre pasa varios años en la cárcel por un crimen que no cometió y, apenas queda libre, es literalmente arrastrado hacia el pasado por una serie de cuentas pendientes que se irán revelando poco a poco. Muchos films han tratado de actualizar los recursos narrativos del cine negro norteamericano, pero ninguno lo ha hecho tan bien como Zift: la fotografía en blanco y negro, el uso de la voz en off, la mujer fatal que podría no serlo, el espacio urbano como prolongación de la prisión, el tono ominoso y el humor amargo. Todo el asunto tiene mucho en común con Traidora y mortal (Out of the Past, 1947), la obra maestra de Jacques Tourneur, e incluso hay algunas citas explícitas a El ocaso de una vida (Sunset Boulevard, Wilder, 1949) y a Gilda (Charles Vidor, 1945). Pero ello no implica una vocación necrófila, sino, por el contrario, la voluntad de hacer una obra autónoma y contemporánea que revitaliza una de las tradiciones más influyentes del cine. Por su seguridad formal y narrativa, Zift es una de las óperas primas más sorprendentes de los últimos años.

A man spends several years in prison for a crime he didn't commit, and just when he is freed, he is literally dragged to the past by a series of unfinished businesses that will be slowly revealed. Many films have tried to update the narrative of American film noir, but none have done as well as Zift: the black and white cinematography, the use of a voice over, the femme fatale who may not be one, the urban scenery as an extension of prison, the ominous tone and bitter humor. The whole thing has a lot in common with Out of the Past, Jacques Tourneur's masterpiece, and there are even some explicit references to Sunset Blvd. (Wilder, 1949) and Gilda (Charles Vidor, 1945). But that doesn't necessary mean that the film adopts a necrophilic attitude; on the contrary, it implies the will to make a self-determining and contemporary film that reinvigorates one of cinema's most influential traditions. Its formal and narrative confidence make Zift one of the most surprising first works in recent years.
