JAVIER FESSER RETROSPECTIVE - OMMISIONS OF THE ACADEMY

A retrospective on Javier Fesser and the great films that were never nominated for an Oscar are to be enjoyed in this Festival’s edition.

The 24º Mar del Plata International Film Festival presents a retrospective on Javier Fesser, the outstanding Spanish filmmaker, winner in the latest Goya awards edition, who will attend the Festival.

Besides, there will be screenings of classic films from all over the world that, astonishingly, never received an Academy Award nomination.

The 24º Mar del Plata International Film Festival presents retrospectives and homages: a retrospective on Madrilenian director Javier Fesser – who will be present at the festival – where the best short and feature films from this outstanding director can be enjoyed.

Fesser will attend all the screenings of his films and will also give a talk at the “Talks with Masters” cicle.

On the other hand, the Festival presents “Omissions of the Academy”, where those great Hollywood films that were never nominated for an Oscar in any category will be screened.
 
In this occasion, the audience will be able to enjoy the work of great directors such as Orson Welles, William Wyler, Robert Aldrich, Richard Brooks, Robert Wise, among others, and true classics like The Set-Up, Hell in the Pacific, Lady in the lake, Flight from destiny, Silent movie, among other films, compiled by critic Homero Alsina Thevenet in his book American Sound Films and the Oscars in Hollywood – 1927-1985, in the chapters “Gaps by the Academy”.

A journey through the life of the Muppets creator

The 24th Mar del Plata International Film Festival, which will take place between 7th and 15th November, will offer a unique opportunity to learn the history and legacy of Jim Henson, the creator of hit shows like Sesame Street and The Muppet Show in a retrospective entitled: Muppets™, Music and Magic: Jim Henson's Legacy.

The tribute will feature special guests who worked with Jim Henson as John Kennedy. He will dictate a Puppet workshop and talks about the universe of the creator of the Muppets.

Remembering the reaction of Kermit, the Frog, before each mime of the charming little pig with aspirations to be a star, Miss Piggy, or the unmistakable educational Sesame Street characters, will be part of a series of four programs that also include some of the less known Henson’s creations, from commercials to experimental films, going through unprecedented episodes and several unpublished documentaries which invite to share the behind the scenes of the most famous TV and the big screen dolls.

The first program, entitled The Art of Puppetry and Storytelling is a compilation of material including a classic episode of The Muppet Show 1979. Program 2, Muppets History 101, will take a look at the early years of the program that redefined children's television before its jump to the programming central hours, in addition to advertising, guest appearances on other programs, and pilot of The Muppet Show called The Muppets: Sex and Violence. The third program, Commercials and Experiments opens the Henson’s Vault and exposes a commercial film produced under contract and two experimental films even stranger made in the '60s, Youth 68 and The Cube and besides the short Time Piece, surrealist masterpiece eight minutes that was nominated for Best Short Film in 1966. The fourth and final program will be devoted to one of the most and best cultivated by Henson characters: music. This program brings together hits and covers from own gang of Muppets, Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, to the brilliant performances of key guests such as Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, Debbie Harry, Raquel Welch, Harry Belafonte and many other key figures of popular culture in recent decades.

The Festival invites to participate, for the first time in Argentina, of this exhaustive and general view of Jim Henson's career since his beginnings in 1955 until his untimely death in 1990, describing his own life compelling world, full of colour, music and unique sense of humour, fulfilled in conjunction with The Jim Henson Legacy.

John Kennedy: Author of the popular book Puppet Mania! & Puppet Planet. Puppeteer working for Sesame Street, Muppet movies, and many other Henson projects will show participants  some of the secrets of making puppets come alive in a workshop that provides  hands-on experience in puppet-making,
creating characters’  personalities, and performance.
John has now been working in film and  television for more than 20 years. Some of his many credits include  Dinosaurs, Sesame Street, Muppets Tonight, Muppets From Space, and The  CountryBears.

Mar del Plata International Film Festival


From Saturday 7th to Sunday November 15, 2009 will be held the 24th edition of International Film Festival Mar del Plata. Like their counterparts in San Sebastian, Berlin, Cannes, Venice, among others, is described by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations, FIAPF, as a category "A", being also the only festival in Latin America with this qualification

The Film Festival is the annual meeting between the public and traditional and avant-garde cinema that occur in the non-competitive sections.

The genesis was in 1954 when the Secretary's Information Office of the President held the First Motion Picture Film Shows in the city of Mar del Plata.

In addition to the hundreds of filmmakers and celebrities who have historically participated in this international festival, since it was resumed in 1996 until 2008, have attended the festival, among many other foreign dignitaries, Gina Lollobrigida, who was paid tribute for being the most popular figure who had attended the first festival in 1954, Jacqueline

It is organized by INCAA (National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts), and in this edition of the Cultural Institute of the Province of Buenos Aires and the Municipality of General Pueyrredón.
