Rose

Rosa / Róza
The end of World War II in May of 1945 brought peace to many people. But it also renewed chaos for others. Smarzowski´s harrowing tale of survival centers on Rose, a Polish woman, whose husband, a German soldier, was killed in the war. Alone in her farm, Rose is defenseless against Russian soldiers -who believe in rape as a form of revenge- or the hungry, desperate Poles. The law of the jungle has apparently replaced the human law, leaving the woman alone against the circumstances. At least until she meets a former officer in the Polish Home Army who arrives at the farm in an attempt to hide his identity. Far from any visual stylization, Rose features a realist story about civilian life in a territory where crime and death are still an everyday reality, and tries to understand the sufferings and contradictions of Poland´s post-war identity.
