Catalina Sandino Moreno to Join the Jury of the International Competition

The multi-award-winning Colombian actress Catalina Sandino Moreno  will replace Kenneth Lonergan on the jury

Mar del Plata, November 14, 2017. The Mar del Plata International Film Festival announces that director-screenwriter Kenneth Lonergan will be unable to take part on the jury of this edition of the International Competition due to problems of a personal nature.  At his suggestion,  his place will be taken by his friend Catalina Sandino Moreno, the star of Maria Full of Grace (María llena eres de gracia)  for which she received the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival as well as an Academy Award nomination as Best Actress and many other international prizes. Born in Bogotá, Catalina Sandino Moreno has had major roles in nearly 30 features, recently including  Custody (Custodia)  in which she appeared with Oscar-winners Viola Davis and Ellen Burstyn. For the past several years, she has portrayed one of the main characters in the  successful series, The Affair, with Dominic West, Maura Tierney and Joshua Jackson. In other films she has appeared alongside Jessica Chastain, Oscar Isaac, Michael Cera, Javier Bardem, Benicio del Toro and Aaron Eckhart. The young  actress will also participate in a panel focusing on  attempts to strengthen the role of women in the film industry and to create stronger roles for women in films.

"My friend Kenny Lonergan called me and told me that he had to drop out of the jury in Mar del Plata, and asked me if I was interested in taking his place. I have always wanted to attend this festival  with one of my movies, but having this opportunity of being a juror, I couldn't let it pass. I am so excited to be part of this year's international jury!"  noted the actress, who will arrive in the city of Mar del Plata on November 17, to be part of the Festival Opening Gala - "I can't wait to watch the incredible selection of films they got this year. Thank you for inviting me."

Lonergan, for his part, expressed deep regret at having to give up his role in the jury this year:

"I am genuinely sorry to announce that I will be unable to attend the Mar Del Plata International Film Festival as planned. Urgent family matters have arisen that make it impossible for me to leave New York next week. I could not be more honored to have been asked to sit on the jury, and to have my work shown at the festival; Im very disappointed not to be there. I wish the MDPIFF every possible success, and Peter Scarlet a wonderful inaugural year".

Scarlet, for his part,  expressed satisfaction with the change:  "I'm very disappointed that Kenneth will be unable to join us, but I've been an admirer of Catalina's work ever since I saw her in Maria Full of Grace. In that film she played a pregnant teenager working as a drug mule in Colombia, to get some desperately needed money to support her family. We met when I was at Tribeca and although we haven't  seen each other since then, when Kenneth Lonergan had to drop out   unexpectedly, I was relieved to know that he was taking the rare step of volunteering to find a replacement.  It was a very pleasant surprise to find out that he was suggesting Catalina, and I am confident that her presence will come to be fondly remembered by all of those who attend the Festival".
