That's how the vanguard is

In his Escritos sobre cine norteamericano, Hoberman defines the Super 8 reduced format as the territory of a truly experimental and democratic cinema. The authors who are willing to be at the vanguard of the vanguard find their natural place there, as Super 8 has its own rules, free from the industry impositions and limitations. This filmic material has always had a protagonist place in the Mar del Plata International Film Festival and the focus entirely devoted to Super 8 is yet another evidence of this commitment.
Conceived as a the “home format”, Super 8 got into many family houses in the ‘70 and ‘80 and opened up the door so many people could record their daily lives, their vacations and their parties. Many kids had their first contact with the experience of narrating through images thanks to one of these cameras and, for the first time, the average man had the opportunity of channeling the secret poetry of his environment by shooting, for example, the flowers in his garden. In other words, Super 8 made possible a form of art that would have been totally impossible in other formats.

This year, the section relies on the participation of seven filmmakers that, with their shorts, honor the tradition of vanguard and experimentation. What is more, as in every edition, every screening will represent a true encounter of love for cinema, reviving the ritual of screening filmic material in the digital era. An experience worth living, both for the new generations who barely know the format and for those who watched cinema for the first time with it.
