PETER SCARLET, NEW FESTIVAL ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
The National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA), coordinator of the 32° edition of the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, INCAA president Ralph Haiek, and José Martínez Suárez, president of the Festival, are proud to present its new artistic director: veteran film festival organizer and programmer, Peter Scarlet.Scarlet is one of the most respected figures on the international film festival scene.
He was the director of the San Francisco International Film Festival, the oldest in the United States for nearly 20 years. Subsequently he became the first foreign-born general director of the Cinémathèque Française in Paris, perhaps the most prestigious European film archive. He returned to New York to serve as artistic director of the Tribeca Film Festival during six of its first seasons, and then moved to the United Arab Emirates as executive director of the Abu Dhabi Film Festival.
His activities in an unofficial capacity have included showing films by Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton in Kabul in March 2002, the first screenings held in that country in several years and the first time many viewers had ever seen a film In July 2016, after the death of Abbas Kiarostami, Scarlet produced a celebration of the renowned artist’s life and career. Organized in only five days without sponsorship by any organization, the event attracted theactive participation of Jim Jarmusch, Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, among other notable figures from the worlds of art and cinema.
Together with Scarlet, Martínez Suárez, president of the Festival for the past decade, and the festival’s film selection team which has already been working together for several seasons, filmmaker and producer Rosa Martínez Rivero was also appointed as the new general producer.
The 32° Mar del Plata International Film Festival, recognized by the Fédération International des Associations des Producteurs de Films (FIAPF) as the only class A festival in Latin America, will feature a new selection of national and foreign feature films, thus contributing with the development of culture, the progress of the international film industry and circulation in global markets. One of the main objectives
of this event is serving as launch site for the local film industry.
The festival will take place from November 17th to 26th, 2017, and it will include the International Competition of feature films, the Latin American Competition of feature and short films, the Argentine Competition of feature and short films, and the Work In
Progress for Argentine productions, plus many more sections and a forum for international cooperation, independent films and documentaries.
