Entangled in the endless arguments about how much a story is ruined by finding out the ending of beforehand, at times we forget to imagine what audience members must have felt in 1960 when Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho began its dedicated and patient description of a secretary who would be murdered 40 minutes into the film, changing forever the possibilities for terrifying an audience. 78/52 obsessively examines the motivations, technical virtues, influences and history behind the iconic shower scene which famously required 78 camera set ups, 52 editing cuts and a week of filming to achieve. And in order to conduct this investigation, the film resorts to an unsurpassable battery of testimonies and opinions (from Peter Bogdanovich and Jamie Lee Curtis to Marli Renfro, who was Janet Leigh’s body double) who discuss the sharpest artists of those times in the history of cinema.
