Monsters Inc. and Cars 2 had already suggested to us that, for Pixar, borders were meant to be crossed (and not reinforced with walls built to divide people for pure demagoguery). So it’s no surprise that the creators of Toy Story 3 delve deep into the Mexican tradition of the Day of the Dead. Coco tells the story of Miguel, a Mexican kid who dreams of becoming a renowned musician just like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt in the original English voice), in spite of the inexplicable ban on music in his family. Desperate for proving his talent, Miguel will end up embroiled in a mysterious chain of events, in the impressive and colorful Land of the Dead. On his way, he meets likeable con artist Héctor (Gael García Bernal), and together they embark on an extraordinary journey to reveal the true reason behind the main character’s family history.
