Anne may be the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, but more than that she’s gout-plagued, obese, lonely, depressed and despite of 17 pregnancies without child. Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough may be merely the closest friend of the Queen, but in reality she ran the country in the final years of Anne’s reign, a fact well known by her coevals who’d talk to her if they wanted to influence policies. Abigail Masham, Baroness Masham, finally, might be new at the court, but shall soon find herself the Queen’s new favourite… The Favourite is probably much closer to historical reality than one would dare to imagine vis-à-vis Lánthimos’ vision of the period that is outré, surreal, vulgar, furious, splendorous and constantly dazzling. It also features duck races cum jokes, casually brutality galore, lesbian desire, rakish naughtiness, and the best en passant brothel scene in ages.
