It is really difficult to feel empathy for the main characters of this third work of genius from the director of In Bruges andSeven Psychopaths. Of course, it’s intentional: if black humor was already a sport he practiced with Olympic strength, here he furthers his art to astounding levels. The "three billboards” of the title refers to the only way a devastated mother finds to complain to the sheriff about the lack of results in the search for the person who murdered her daughter. The billboards will unleash some big hell in that small town, depriving everyone of false courtesy, political correctness and, in many cases, "classic” moral values. Shifting tone and humor, this ferocious, virtuous cocktail struggles constantly between laughter and compassion for those characters devoid of any kind of filter. Without a doubt, one of the best films of the year. Laughing has never made you feel this guilty.
Born in England in 1970, he is a director, screenwriter and playwright. His films include In Bruges(2008) and Seven Psychopaths (2012). Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and won the audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival.
