Given his impressive acting career, Paul Dano’s directorial debut shouldn’t come as a surprise: it’s everything one would expect from him and more, proving that his talent isn’t confined to acting. Based on the Richard Ford novel of the same name with a script written in partnership with his partner Zoe Kazan, Dano’s film portrays the disintegration of a family as seen through the eyes of a teenage boy in a small town in Montana in 1960. The conservative environment only heightens the boy’s surprise at his father’s professional ups and downs and their effect on his mother’s composure as she yearns for stability. Giving the actors all the space they need to shine, Dano has produced a careful character study that gets the best out of Carey Mulligan, Jake Gyllenhaal and Ed Oxenbould in a subtle, slow-burning melodrama.
