Must-Sees - 3rd Forum on Cinema and Gender Perspective: Gender Inequalities in Cinema

For the third year in a row, the Forum on cinema and gender perspective - Gender inequalities in cinema was held. It was moderated by Lic. Analía Barrionuevo (Coordinator of the Central Unit for Gender Policies of the Dean of the National University of Córdoba) and featured the reflections of Annamaria Muchnik (President of the Association of Women and Film), María Alché (Actress, director and member of the Filmmakers Collective / Colectivo de Cineastas), Julia Kratje (President of the Argentine Association of Film and Audiovisual Studies - AsAECA), Florencia Mamani (member of Colectivo Identidad Marrón and project Cine Marrón / “Brown People’s Collective”) and Beatriz Navas Valdés (General Director of the Institute of Film and Audiovisual Arts, ICAA Spain – President of the Ibermedia Program). Because of the diversity and depth of the ideas that were raised, and the necessary debates that it opens year after year, the Forum shows that it’s consolidated as a fundamental part of the Festival, to contribute to an audiovisual expression, an industry and a society ever more worthy and equitable.

As the Artistic Director of the Festival, Cecilia Barrionuevo, pointed out in her introduction for the event, “to carry out the Forum within the framework of this event, which is international, allows us to make problems visible in another way, and also to build collective tools for equality”. In this way, she celebrated the participation of more than 300 people who virtually attended the Forum from countries such as Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, United States, France, Italy, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, United Kingdom and Uruguay, in addition to each province of Argentina. Barrionuevo added: “That the Festival assumes definitions and positions itself from a feminist paradigm implies an active attitude to transform reality, from microgestures to big issues, and it is our responsibility to do so from that conception that seeks equal rights, equity, sisterhood, inclusion”.

The Forum, which had Argentine Sign Language interpreters and simultaneous translation into English, began with an exposition by Annamaria Muchnik, who described the origins of the festival and Association of Women and Film, in addition to evoking María Luisa Bemberg and her work in the entity. She stated that “it is very important to have a very clear horizon. And ours is to support, spread, show all women that it is possible, and show their works. The film schools that were opening, the return to democracy in our country and the women’s movements have made the festival grow, and women to know more and more that the films they make are truly important ”.

Later on, filmmaker María Alché referred to the “priority of federalizing cinema and generating a possibility for funding to reach the greatest number of women, not only certain middle-class women, but that it can be extended to the entire country, to all diversities, to different social classes”. She also argued that on many occasions “what we see through the platforms are representations of women that reinforce stereotypes or clichés”. Julia Kratje, for her part, chronologically reviewed women’s access to film criticism in our country and the world, as well as the emergence and notions of feminist criticism. She finished by saying that “from academia to journalism, and from media coverage of entertainment to papers, feminist criticism seeks to avoid the comfort of stiff speech, domesticated by the application of consensual formulas.”

Florencia Mamani, member of Colectivo Identidad Marrón / Brown Identity and project Cine Marrón / “Brown People’s Collective”, raised the need for a cinema with a gender perspective that also takes into account an anti-racist perspective. She also emphasized the need to reflect on the imaginaries that Argentine cinema has historically produced and installed on national identity, generating marginalizing stereotypes about brown identities and indigenous people: “We can whiten the gaucho, but not the indigenous.” Next, Beatriz Navas Valdés, General Director of the ICAA Spain and the Ibermedia Program, raised the idea that “in addition to talking and thinking, we must take steps, move forward, because we have an important structural problem. If we do not take positive discrimination measures, we will take long”. And she added that it is necessary “not to be afraid of decision-making positions; there is a demand for even our revolution and our resistance to be perfect, and not at all, we must take action like wild horses, we have no alternative”, considering that “we must never stop being alert”, and calling to “alert and be alerted” each time the lack of women is noticed in the different spaces.

After the Q&A, Lic. Analía Barrionuevo, moderator of the space, pointed out that the exchange was very interesting, and that all the people who attended the Forum left “with quite a few ideas, perhaps restless and uncomfortable, which is good, because reality makes us uncomfortable, but we can also see what has been achieved, and we know that there are many rights to be conquered”. The forum closed with an action in favor of the discussion in Congress on the voluntary interruption of pregnancy. At the end, a green “pañuelazo” was made, the symbol of the campaign in Argentina.
