Must-Sees - Book Presentation Panel: El asombro y la audacia. El cine de María Luisa Bemberg

As part of the Tribute dedicated to Maria Luis Bemberg, an essential filmmaker in the world of Argentine cinema, the 35th edition of the Mar del Plata Film Festival has published a book about her career, in addition to screening two of her feature films Momentos and De eso se no se habla. Following are the details.

With a stellar panel, the book El asombro y la audacia. El cine de María Luisa Bemberg, -downloadable in this link- which the Festival published to accompany the tribute that it offers to this most important Argentine director, both in this edition and from the screenings of her works in previous years. Julia Kratje and Marcela Visconti, compilers of the book, were the moderators of the discussion, and the latter pointed out that this edition “is organized from a very broad set of voices from friends, filmmakers, writers, colleagues, moviegoers, feminists, researchers and critics who remembered the director.” In addition, she described that the publication explores “some dimensions of her life and her work as a screenwriter and director, her ideas and her feminist militancy.”

Later the brilliant reflections of some of the leading figures who contributed to this book arrived, starting with the formidable Graciela Borges, who recalled Bemberg’s first approaches to the cinematographic profession, as well as the way in which she accompanied her until her death: “I was close to her until her last days. What’s more, I arrived at her house with flowers and chocolates when she was dying. Of course I did not entered her house. But I knew that forever she would be in my heart. She was a teacher and a friend”.

Then, the director and producer Vanessa Ragone took the floor. She recalled the paths that the filmmaker opened to women in the film industry and pointed out that “the space that María Luisa provided to us directors and producers was unique, and continues to be very vital and necessary. She anticipated this in the 90s”.

Researcher María Laura Rosa, for her part, analyzed the impact of Bemberg’s ideas and work today, and referred to her as “a woman with a fabulous intellectual level, and a militant of whom we must be extremely proud of because of the legacy she has left us”. Producer Lita Stantic, who worked alongside Bemberg on five of her feature films, recalled the personal drive that led her to break her partnership with Alejandro Doria in order to work alongside Bemberg, and described her ten-year experience as “the most interesting, because I had never worked so hard (…) María Luisa made me work extremely hard, but those were the most productive years. And, eventually, all those who had not believed in her had to say: ‘Yes, it’s true that María Luisa is a very important director for Argentine cinema’”. Finally, Annamaría Muchnik, President of the Association and Festival of Women and Film, recalled the difficult context in which Bemberg made her way with her filmography: “Today is different, but at that time there were many women who had drive, ideals and were prepared, and nobody gave them the opportunity to take the important step to capture in images what they thought and what they felt”.
