Young Critics Award
Special Mention - «Como el cielo después de llover» by Mercedes Gaviria
Mercedes Gaviria is a young Colombian woman who left her country in order to study film in Buenos Aires. Her mother didn’t want her to go to live so far away from her, and tried to convince her to go to the University of Bogotá. Some news change the fate of the protagonist of this story–her father Víctor Gaviria, a well-regarded filmmaker, will return to cinema after many years. Mercedes wants to be near him, from another place this time. By email, she offers to be his personal assistant, an excuse to become part of the crew in The Animal’s Wife, a film about gender violence. The Calm After the Storm is an autobiography merged with a family puzzle made from the home movies Víctor shot when his children were little. At the beginning of the film, Mercedes caresses the leaves of a plant that falls asleep when it’s touched. It is that kind of measureless beauty that cannot be described–you have to see it.
