Latin American Competition
Special Mention - «Fauna» by Nicolás Pereda
Paco and Luisa, both of them actors, arrive at her hometown. First they run into Gabino, Luisa’s brother. Then, in a great comedic moment that involves some overpriced cigarettes sold on the street, Paco meets her father, even though he doesn’t know it’s her father. As the film progresses we see how Paco witnesses a series of awkward moments that pave the way for a long scene where Gabino and Luisa’s father force Paco to act a scene from Narcos, where he had a small, wordless role. Pereda blurs the boundaries between fiction and reality at all times–Francisco Barreiro, the actor playing the actor Paco, really did act in Narcos, and his part was the one the fictional Paco says to have played. But the director rewards us with one more layer of mystery and metalanguage by presenting, in its second part, a story within the story starring the same cast that is fascinating to watch and crowns a film that is generous in every possible way.
