Astor Piazzolla Award for Best Feature Length Film - «El año del descubrimiento» de Luis López Carrasco
The year 1992 marked the 500th anniversary of Colombus’ arrival in America. In Spain, it was also the year of the Barcelona Olympic Games and the universal exposition of Seville, two moments of the country’s symbolical entrance to the new Europe, while in the Netherlands, the Treaty on European Union was being signed. At the same time, in Cartagena, Murcia, a series of strikes ended up with the local parliament being set on fire. The Year of the Discovery takes place in a time between that one and ours, at a bar in the city where people from different generations get together to drink, eat and talk. The conversations are pierced through by those events, but mainly by their collateral damage. From one side of the screen as well as the other (left and right), we see the faces of a voluntarily involuntary community, the kind that used to exist when bars were an unrestricted space of circulation in which history was commented on every day, at every possible scale.
