“Why am I always at weddings and never actually getting married?” says Charles, with that cross between charm and awkwardness that made Hugh Grant a star. The phrase perfectly sums up the premise of this great little film that became an unexpected success and gave British cinema an international boost. Four Weddings and a Funeral follows the adventures and misadventures of Charles and his 30-something friends at the social events mentioned in the film’s title and his meeting with, perhaps, the love of his life. Pushing the boundaries of the genre, building a world of endearing secondary characters, this is a film as much about love as it is about friendship. And with just the right doses of irony, tenderness and existential crisis, Four Weddings and a Funeral became a landmark foundational film that changed the face of ‘90s romantic comedy.
