Of Bulls and Cows
Patricia Mazuy’s interest for animals has been captured extensively over the course of her filmography, through such films as Of Women and Horses, a fiction set in the world of equestrian sports, or Of Bulls and Cows, a documentary on the cattle industry. If the fiction tackled the universe of sports with an acetic, critical gaze, the documentary offers an approach through the opposite side of life. There, the filmmaker allows herself to observe, with a sensitive eye, the relationship between a cattle breeder and his animals, giving shape to a portrait that doesn’t shy away from humor to tackle such issues as genetic tests, artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization or cloning in the world of animal breeding. Made per request from the French Ministry of Agriculture, Of Bulls and Cows is further proof that one can make something extraordinary even if it’s made for hire.
