Tommy Fawkes (Oliver Platt) is a tormented comedian who, after having bombed at a Las Vegas stage in front of the inquisitive gaze of his father (Jerry Lewis), a popular comedian who has upstaged him his entire life, disappears from the stage to begin again. He does so in Blackpool, a small English coastal town inhabited by a curious troupe of characters that will parade through the audition Tommy organizes in order to find new comedic blood. He crosses paths with Jack Parker (Lee Evans), an eccentric artist with whom he has a lot in common. Funny Bones went unnoticed during the ‘90s, perhaps due to its mixtures of comedic tones and a curious police procedural subplot —with hints of gore— that impregnates the film, which should be rediscovered because it’s filled with ideas and some fascinating freedom, and is one of the strangest works ever made about the art of making people laugh.
