What is the impact a pregnancy has in the body of a woman when desire is absent? The first feature by Michelle Garza Cervera explores this question through Valeria, a young woman who has left behind an adolescence made up of hard rock and sexual explorations in order to form a traditional family alongside her husband. The pregnancy triggers in Valeria an increasing feeling of awkwardness with her own body, while an entity invades her home and puts her own life, as well as her family’s, in danger. The protagonist finds help in two women who have escaped the patriarchal mandates regarding the building of a standard family—her aunt Isabel and Octavia, her teenage love. Huesera picks up a traditional Mexican legend from a contemporary perspective, with rationed-out visual horror and one central concern—how sociocultural mandates can affect a person’s vital decisions.
