During the last few years, filmmakers as important as Quentin Tarantino or Paul Thomas Anderson have devoted themselves to paying tribute to cinema and the films that influenced them during their childhood. After the award-winning 1917, Sam Mendes went further beyond and wrote a story about projection booths and their vitality. Empire of Light follows a group of employees of the Empire Theater in the early 1980s, in the South Coast of England. That place isn’t just the space in which audiences will enjoy their favorite films; it also became an ecosystem in itself, with multiple social edges —from abuse of power to racism— in its inner dynamics. Mendes, accompanied by the music of the duo Reznor/Ross and the cinematography by the historic Roger Deakins, achieves a touching attempt to depict the intrinsic relationship between audiences and movie magic.
