I Promise You a Long Friendship
Argentina’s cultural history is full of curious friendships and failed projects. I Promise You a Long Friendship deals with a specific case in which both situations combine—the bond between Victoria Ocampo and Romanian-French writer Benjamin Fondane, a long-distance friendship driven by a shared passion for art. Fondane, who would die in 1944 at a concentration camp in Auschwitz, directed an insane film in Argentina: Tararira, which was burnt by its producer and is currently lost. Jimena Repetto’s first feature avoids the guidelines of traditional documentary cinema in order to explore, from a humorous side, the relationship between Ocampo and Fondane, through interviews, archive research and reenactments that are an invitation to problematizing the film’s very form. An adventure its characters would have ultimately loved.

Jimena Repetto
Jimena Repetto was born in Buenos Aires in 1980. She is a writer, director and teacher. She published the books Diario de Yoko (2014), El año del León (2016) and Cómo permanecer despiertos (2022), among others. I Promise You a Long Friendship is her first feature, and the first in a trilogy about friendship she’s currently working on.
