< Back to listVera
Vera Gemma is a celebrity in Italy. She is an actress, but what made her famous are not her acting chops; it’s her last name and the place she has within the universe of a certain ironic cult following. On the one hand, Vera is known as the daughter of actor Giuliano Gemma, a myth of spaghetti westerns. But also for her addiction to plastic surgeries, which turned her into an automatic meme. That was the image filmmakers Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel had of her, and never thought of her as someone they could work with. That is, until they met her. Far from joining the claque, they make an honest portrait that reveals the humanity behind the figurine. A free, liberating film about a smart, fun person who’s a victim of the mandate of eternal beauty that forces women to always look beautiful and young, under the threat of being forgotten if they don’t.
